What to Wear for Your Headshots:

By March 25, 2025April 8th, 2025How to

Hey friend! So, you’ve got a headshot session coming up—yay! Whether it’s for your website, social media or a personal branding refresh, I know you want to look and feel like your best self. One of the most common questions I get is, “What should I wear for my headshots?” Don’t stress, I’ve got you covered!

First things first: How do you want people to feel when they see your headshot?

Think about the mood you’re going for. What do you want your headshot to say about you? Are you aiming for approachable and friendly, polished and professional, or creative and bold? Once you’ve got that in mind, it makes outfit choices so much easier. Here are a few style ideas based on the kind of impression you’re hoping to make:

Casual and Friendly

If you want your headshots to feel warm and welcoming, go for light neutrals like white, cream, beige, or soft gray. A flowy white blouse with well-fitted blue jeans and casual heels (or even cute flats) looks effortlessly put together and super inviting. Keep it relaxed but intentional. Opt for a natural make-up look & hair down too!

Creative and Confident

Want to show off a little personality? Add something unique to your look—chunky statement earrings, a funky necklace, a cool hat, or even a swipe of bold red lipstick. You’ll still want to start with a simple base (darker solid neutral tops work great), then layer on that creative twist that makes you stand out!

Classic and Professional

You can’t go wrong with a tailored black blazer or a sleek black top. Black photographs beautifully and gives you that timeless, confident vibe. Pair it with black or dark-wash pants or a pencil skirt, and boom—power move. Throw on your favorite pair of heels with your outfit and you are ready to go!

My go-to tips:

Stick to solid colors & neutrals

Neutrals like black, white, beige, gray, navy, and earth tones are your besties here. They keep the focus on your face (where we want it!) and don’t distract from your expression. Skip loud patterns, logos, and super bright neons (unless that’s your brand of course!)

Fit is everything

Make sure whatever you wear fits you well and makes you feel comfortable. A tailored jacket or blazer is always a win, but avoid anything too boxy or oversized—it can look sloppy in photos. A structured, well-fitted jacket helps you look sharp and professional. And bonus, it adds a layers so you can quickly change up your photos by taking the jacket off for some photos!

Details matter

Before you head out the door, give your outfit a once-over. Are your clothes steamed or ironed? Because wrinkles are sneaky! Did you do a quick lint roll? (Especially with darker colors like black or navy!) Is your hair looking the way you want it for the shoot? And bring your lipstick with you to the shoot for any needed touch ups!

Accessories are your personal touch

Keep it simple but you. Small, classic jewelry like studs or a dainty necklace is always safe, but if you love bold pieces, go for it! Hats are always a fun accessory too. Just make sure they complement rather than compete with your overall look.

Hair & makeup tips

A little polish goes a long way. Even if you’re all about the natural look (love that!), a bit of light makeup can go a long way, so throw on a little extra mascara & some blush for the shoot! Professional makeup is always an option too, but the goal is to still feel like you. Reach out if you want a reference for a local makeup artist!
